In a lecture hall at UAB in the 90s, V. Ramachandra told us about a patient of his that was having recurring phantom limb pain. His arm had been amputated months before, but he said it felt like his (former) arm was pulled up around his back.

Ramachandra asked him to use a mirror so that his reflection looked as if he had two arms. Standing in front of the mirror he was told to imitate, with his actual arm, the position his virtual arm was in, then slowly bring them both around to the front. That way it looked as if both arms were moving around from in back of him.

It sort of worked for a while. Eventually the pain came back, but he was asked to keep practicing it.

Quite late one night he got a call from his patient who just said "It's gone!". Not only had the pain disappeared, but the sensation of having the virtual arm had gone away permanently.

Quite recently somebody showed up in Birmingham, Alabama having absconded with our old band's name, Phantom Limb. I hear they were very good. We'll adjust.

This story is as accurate as I can remember it.
